FAYETTE, Mo. - Junior Edward Stewart ran to a national championship in the 60-meter hurdles to lead the Central Methodist University men's track & field team to a tie for 11th place at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships - powered by Dex in Johnson City, Tenn.

Stewart (Kingston, Jamaica) followed up his school-record time of 7.94 seconds in the semifinals of the 60 hurdles Friday by clocking a time of 7.97 to win the national title by .06 seconds Saturday afternoon. After barely qualifying for the semifinals, Stewart ran a season-best and school-record time of 7.94 for the fastest time in the semis. Stewart became the sixth individual men's indoor track & field national champion in CMU history with his win in the 60 hurdles.

Three other CMU men's athletes earned All-America honors by finishing in the top six of their respective events. Altogether, the Central Methodist men scored 16 points at the meet to finish in a tie for 11th place, which was the highest finish of any Heart of America Athletic Conference team at the meet.

Sophomore Lucas Manring (Stockton, Mo.) ran a personal-best time for the second day in a row to finish fourth in the 800m. Manring finished in 1 minute, 53.26 seconds to place fourth, just .02 behind the third-place time in the event. He had recorded a personal-best time of 1:53.71 in the semifinals Friday, before bettering that mark in Saturday's final.

Junior Mike Hernandez (Balmorhea, Texas) and freshman Edwin Kurgat (Eldoret, Kenya) each earned sixth-place finishes for Central Methodist. Hernandez got the day-three action started for CMU by running more than three seconds faster than his previous season-best to finish sixth in the mile run. Hernandez clocked a time of 4:14.15 to earn All-America honors, bettering his previous season-best time of 4:17.63. Kurgat clocked a time of 8:34.82, just one-half second off his season-best, to place sixth in the 3,000m and earn All-America status.

In addition to the four All-Americans, CMU also had two other top-eight finishes at the national championships. Senior Elizabeth Zaragoza (Dixon, Mo.) just missed All-America honors for the CMU women by finishing seventh in the 800m. Zaragoza had a time of 2:17.51 to finish just behind the sixth-place time of 2:17.28. The men's distance medley relay team of Hernandez, sophomore Josh Whitener (Imperial, Mo.), Manring and junior Josphat Sawe (Kapsabet, Kenya) ran its second-best time of the season to finish in eighth place. The Central Methodist DMR posted a time of 10:17.32 in the finals, just one second off the season-best time of 10:16.34 from the semifinal round.
