GIRL SCOUTS EARN A BADGE WITH AVILA UNIVERSITY'S WOMEN'S SPORTS TEAM
On Saturday, March 6, 2010, 92 Junior Level Girl Scouts, representing 14 troops from the Greater Kansas City Area, spent the morning and early afternoon going through nine mini workshops representing the requirements for their Sports Sampler badge. The young girls worked with Avila University's women's sports teams, as well as the trainers, and met the following requirements for their badge:
· Learned the important of warm-up and cool-down stretching.
· Acquired three skills in volleyball, basketball, cheer, dance, softball, soccer, and golf by working with Avila's women's teams,
· Discovered the most common injuries athletes might incur during a game and how to prevent and/or treat them
· Participated in a discussion as to what it takes to become a "college athlete" in today's world, just how far women's sports have come, and the five points of the Champions of Character program through the session called "Her Story".
· All 92 scouts performed a cheer for the leaders and other adults present.
· At the end of the sessions, the scouts had a chance to just "play" with their newly learned skills from the various Avila women's teams.
Avila University is an NAIA Institution which participates in the Champions of Character program. By working with the young girls this year, Avila's women sports teams are "giving back to the community" through servant leadership, one of the five core values of the Champions of Character program - Respect, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Responsibility, Servant Leadership. This is the fifth year for Avila University Athletics to present Sports Sampler for the Girl Scouts, and the teams are looking forward to sharing this event with a new group of Girl Scouts in sprint of 2011.
