The William Jewell College
women's basketball team seniors have scored significant achievements during
their four years at Jewell. Members of the class of 2010 have notched four
national tournament appearances, two sweet 16 appearances, two conference
championships, two conference tournament championships and an overall record of
100-34.
Senior
guard Hillary Adams of Nevada, Mo., has earned her fourth National Association
of Intercollegiate Athletics All-America Honorable Mention recognition. Adams
joins teammates Erica Akins, Jackie Discher, Brandie Roberts and Haley Stockton
as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. In order to
earn Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a junior or above
in academic standing, be in attendance at their nominating institution for one
full year, and have a Grade Point Average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for
the current academic year.
A
starter in 33 of the 34 games in 2009-10, Adams led Jewell with 15.6 points and
2.8 assists per game while finishing third on the team in steals (1.2). Adams
finishes her storied career with 2,028 career points for William Jewell and 305
career assists. She currently sits in second place on the career scoring list
and fourth on the career assist list. This is only the third time in school
history for a player to reach 2,000 points, and is the only time a player has
accumulated 2,000 points and 300 assists.
"My teammates all mean the
world to me and my individual success is all because of them," said Adams. "They
pushed me every day to work to become a better person and basketball player. My
senior teammates, especially, have been there for 4 years and have been a big
part of my life. I know my fellow seniors will be successful in anything that
they do and I look forward to staying in touch as the friends we've
become."
Senior forward Erica Ferguson
finished number 6 in Jewell history in scoring with 1,816 points, number 4
all-time with 804 rebounds, and number 8 in assists all-time with 254. Ferguson
was also an NAIA All-American in 2008-09 and a four- time All-Conference
performer.
Senior Jessica Stewart finishes her Jewell career as number
one all-time in assists with 459. She was also an NAIA All-American in 2007-08
and was an All-Conference selection all four years.
Senior Haley
Stockton was a three-time Daktronics-NAIA
Scholar-Athlete and Kelsey Workman served as a student assistant coach
for 3 years.
"I am really proud of this group of student-athletes," said
head coach Jill Cress. "Many athletes hope to have the chance to experience one
conference title or one trip to the national tournament. But this is a group
that has been consistently successful because of their leadership and their work
ethic. They will be missed."
In the group there were 6 All-American
recognitions, 7 Daktronics-NAIA
Scholar-Athlete recognitions and 12 All-Conference
recognitions.
The
Cardinals finished their season 26-8 and champions of the Heart of America
Athletic Conference. They were defeated in the first round of the NAIA Division
I National Tournament by Oklahoma Baptist 64-57.
