Headlining this year's rosters are over twenty players who garnered some type of All-American honors at the NAIA level as well as several NFL and pro hopefuls.
"The talent level of this year's squad is tremendous" said Jason Dannelly of the Victory Sports Network. "There are a few guys in this game that will be on an NFL roster by the end of the month."
Last year's roster had four players signed to NFL contracts, two to the CFL and numerous others to AFL, AF2 and other professional contracts.
Eight players of the 140 on the roster were named first team All-American on the Victory Sports Network All-American team or by the AFCA Coaches All-American team.
Bernard Payton, a running back from Malone College in Canton, Ohio, rushed for 1637 yards last season and 955 yards in 2006 for the Pioneers. Payton also proved to be versatile out of the backfield as a receiver as he accumulated 1104 receiving yards the last two seasons. Payton will play for the Nationals.
McKay Dunn, a wide receiver from Southern Virginia in Buena Vista, Va., brings big time numbers into the "Senior Classic." Dunn finished the season leading the NAIA in receptions and receiving yards per game. He totaled 111 receptions for 1,681 yards and 14 touchdowns. Dunn will play for the Nationals.
Jeremy Robinson, a linebacker from Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais, Ill., was a first team AFCA All-American and a second team VSN All-American. Robinson totaled a team-leading 121 tackles, including 52 solo tackles despite missing the first game of the season. Robinson also recorded 15 tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, five sacks, four pass break-ups, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Robinson is on the Americans' roster.
Brandon Kaufman, a defensive back from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., was a unanimous first team All-American selection. Kaufman was a starter all four years of his career at Bethel and was named the KCAC player of the year last season. Kaufman will play for the Americans.
Gary Thomas, a defensive back from Jamestown College in Jamestown, N.D., is one of three Jimmies playing in this season's game. One of the others is second team All-American offensive lineman Dale Ackland. Thomas ranked 8th in the Dakota Athletic Conference in tackles, with an average of 8.5 per game. He had a total of 93 tackles, 69 solo on the season. Thomas and the rest of the Jimmies will play for the Nationals.
Reggie Singletary, a linebacker from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., is one of eight Vikings selected to play in the game after their run to the NAIA semifinals last season. Singletary was named Heart of America Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after finishing 2007 with 54 total tackles, 33 of those solo, 17 tackles for a loss and five sacks.
