KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The top-five ranked teams held this week, announced in the fourth edition of the 2009-2010 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, released by the NAIA office Monday. No. 1 Mountain State (W.Va.) again is the top-ranked team, this time for the fourth straight poll, with nine first-place votes and 310 total points. With a perfect 20-0 record, the Cougars have one game this week against Newport News (Va.) on Thursday.

 

No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) is unblemished at 17-0 and earned two first-place nods. The Eagles took down then-No. 4 Biola (Calif.) 66-56 on Saturday. This week, Concordia posted 303 total points.

 

No. 3 Oklahoma Baptist holds at the third-spot for the fourth consecutive week. The Bison tallied the remaining first-place vote and 292 total points. Oklahoma Baptist is one of three undefeated teams remaining with a 17-0 overall record.

 

No. 4 Biola and No. 5 Louisiana State-Shreveport round out the top five teams this week. Biola had its 16-game winning streak snapped on Saturday against Concordia but holds strong at the fourth position. LSU-Shreveport is 14-2 on the year and has won five of its last six games.

 

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The fifth regular season Top 25 poll will be announced on Monday, Jan. 25.

NOTES: Three teams fall from the Top 25 since the last week:  No. 7 Fresno Pacific (Calif.) and No. 19 Cumberlands (Ky.) and No. 22 Lee (Tenn.)… No. 1 Mountain State (W.Va.) holds the most wins in Division I with 20… No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) has been ranked in the Top 25 the last 11 polls... Mountain State has now been mentioned in the Top 5 the last 36 straight polls (dating back to mid-season of the 2006-07 polls)… Coach Harry Statham of No. 8 McKendree (Ill.) earned career win No. 1,000 on Nov. 13 - he holds the most wins of any men's basketball four-year college head coach (including NAIA and NCAA)… Mountain State has been in the Top 25 for the last 114 consecutive weeks, which is the longest active streak in Division I… This year (through five polls), there have been two different No. 1 teams (Robert Morris (Ill.) and now Mountain State) -- last year (in 13 polls), there were six different No. 1 teams (Oklahoma City, California Baptist, Cumberlands (Ky.), Mountain State, Westminster (Utah) and Rogers State (Okla.))… Mountain State (W. Va.) has been No. 1 a total of 43 times since 2000, which marks the highest total of any program in that span - Robert Morris (Ill.) is next in line with 13 No. 1's.
