Graceland men’s soccer star Kevin Souter is
chasing his dream. Souter, a 2nd
team all-american midfielder from Portsoy, Scotland, had made the decision
following the Jackets great run back to the national tournament in 2007 to forgo
his senior season, and become a professional soccer player.
However, after much talk with teammates and coaches,
Souter changed his mind and decided he wanted to finish his degree as
well as try to make another run at a national championship at Graceland. Fate however, stepped in the way. Kevin was invited to the Kansas City Wizards
open tryout and after impressing the coaching staff during the two day tryout,
Souter will be given the opportunity to fight for a spot on the team’s 28-man
roster. He will begin training with the
Wizards at Tuesday's training session and will accompany the team to Argentina
February 27th for two and a half weeks.
“I couldn’t be happier for Kevin,” Jacket Head Coach
Ivan Joseph stated. “He has worked so hard and this could not have
happened to a nicer guy. The entire program shares in his joy at this
achievement. This is a goal we knew was within our programs grasp.
Souter being picked up by an MLS team and the national championship validates
that we are doing things right with our training and player development program,”
Joseph finished with.
Kevin Souter also spent last summer playing for the
Des Moines Menace of the PDL. During his
tenure with the Menace, Souter was coached by Casey Mann. Mann had this to say about Souter’s
achievement, “Kevin was a great player and I knew that he was among the best
players to come though our club in the last few years,” Mann said. “His work ethic and humility are hard to find
in a player of his caliber. Graceland players are among some of the best
to come though our program and we are pleased with his success. The
Menace wish him the best of luck. This is the fourth player to have been picked
up by an MLS team from the Menace this year and we are happy to have been a
part of his development.”
Over 225 players from more than 15 different
countries participated in Kansas City's first open tryout since the 1996 season
when MLS staged open tryouts in each MLS market. Souter, is one of the few that have the
opportunity to earn an MLS professional contract.
